AFTERNOON TEA AT DESIGN MIAMI 2021

LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 2021: BOHINC STUDIO PRESENTS AFTERNOON TEA
From 20th to 24th September 2021, Bohinc Studio shows its new collection of furniture in the residential setting of a London townhouse. Each floor presents a different living situation: the ground floor is the dining area and study, the first floor is the living room and home library and the second floor is the bedroom with ensuite bathroom.
The new playful collection on show is Bohinc Studio’s most feminine to date, with shapes that are round, embracing and loveable. Further developing Lara Bohinc’s geometric style, the new pieces feature spheres and circles, with only subtle use of straight lines and angles.
Bohinc Studio presents the new pieces in a home setting which mixes period features and contemporary aesthetics, building on the brand’s signature style. Raw concrete and exposed brickwork contrast the period cornicing, decorated in a geometric fashion in dialogue with the original architectural lines. The mix of colour is pronounced - the walls are painted in dusky tones of light terracotta, muted pinks, cherry and brown tones, set against a backdrop of grey and black. The furniture contrasts the space with very light tones - soft upholstered seating pieces are presented in white, cream and slightly toned pink bouclé and furry fabrics. The tables are made in white or black stained wood or in lightly toned marbles. Additionally there are accents of bright colours with powder coated steel dining chairs in red or cherry colours.
‘I wanted to design a space that is happy, warm and inviting, full of character and contrast. I love to use colour to create mood and texture to create a desire to touch, adds Lara Bohinc. “I aimed to create a sensual space. The pandemic forced us all to spend more time at home, and I realised I wanted my pieces to make you feel loved, cocooned and happy. I also wanted to create pieces that look like they are good enough to eat. The collection’s name is an appreciation of the sweet comfort of an afternoon tea - happy, joyful and indulgent moments, a time when friends and family meet; an occasion very much missed in recent
times.’
Materials play an important part in the collection, which contrasts soft textured upholstery seating pieces, with other tables and chairs presented in smooth marble, stained wood or metal. This collection has less metalwork than previous collections and has a soft and warm feel. All pieces are made by hand in the
studio workshops in Europe and UK.

MOONRISE LIGHTING COLLECTION BY LARA BOHINC FOR ROLL & HILL
New York, NY – Today, Brooklyn-based design and manufacturing company Roll & Hill unveiled the Moonrise collection, a series of lights designed by Lara Bohinc. This is Roll & Hill’s first collaboration with Lara Bohinc and Moonrise is her first foray into lighting design collaborations.
The Moonrise collection was inspired by different phases of the Moon, with round and half round shapes composed in playful composition which are seen differently from every angle, just as we see changing Moon shapes within its cycle. It includes three pieces – two sconces and one chandelier - which range in price from $1,100 to $15,625. Each piece is available in brushed brass or black anodized aluminium, 120v or 240v.
Lara’s fascination with contradiction, deconstruction and reconfiguration of forms informed the design: bold yet light, graphic yet fluid, geometric yet feminine. The pieces are constructed using intricately machined aluminium that creates both the structure and the design.
“Lighting is like jewelry for the room – it brings sparkle, life and joy to any space. Lights are accents that determine the mood. The room is never complete without lighting,” Bohinc says.
Moonrise is currently featured in The New York Times and Wallpaper*.

CELEBRATING LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL WITH A LAUNCH OF NEW 'ION COLLECTION'
London, 14th September 2020
To mark the 18th edition of London Design Festival (12 - 20 September 2020), Bohinc Studio launches “ion” - a new lighting collection.
ion, (meaning ‘going’ in Greek), continues the studio’s research into shapes inspired by the rings of Jupiter, which originally produced the Jupiter vase (September 2019); brass within an arrangement of solid, parallel carved marble rods, each echoing the other’s arc.
With ion, Lara Bohinc applies this form to concepts of lighting, in which parallel rods expressing Jupiter’s rings are reinterpreted as solid cylindrical beams of light. The designs embody the idea of two light rays, captured in time, as they emanate from their corresponding metal expressions. The resulting forms are simultaneously familiar and yet futuristic.
“For this year’s edition of LDF, I especially wished to capture a sense of optimism through my design” adds Lara Bohinc. “Futurism implies movement, glorifies modernity and seeks departure from antiquity - through evolution, revolution or
disruption. I explored new forms inspired by the Jupiter vase, to find new ways for the parallel rings to rupture away from their true concentric forms, to become movement and light.”
The futuristic ion collection is presented within the fictional context of an alternative future, in which nature retakes its hold on our world; deserted cities and houses are overgrown by tropical plants. The result entwines the inside with the outside, signifying nature’s irrepressible desire for growth. “Over the past few months, like many others, I have been reflecting on what the future might look like” concludes Lara Bohinc. “During the quiet of the pandemic, whilst people
were leaving cities for the countryside, nature seemed more powerful, more vibrant and wild animals increasingly roamed urban areas. For the photo shoot, we imagined such a future, in which plants have taken over abandoned
town houses in the metropolis.”

WINTER SHOW AT FUMI GALLERY
London, Friday 1st November 2019.
Gallery FUMI invites you to escape the winter chill and step into their new group show Chance Encounters. The exhibition features the works of the gallery’s close-knit assortment of international artists and designers, all met at chance moments in time that have grown to become close friends. This show accentuates the international influences on the collection, bringing together works that seem entirely unrelated in style and construction but create perfect harmonies within the space.
Two new Lara Bohinc’s lacquered works are presented at the exhibition. Her signature combination of playful geometry and vivid colour palette found a new creative outlet during her artist residency in Wajima Japan in 2017. Her newest works, the Rising Moon Table and Setting Sun Chair, command attention with their sleek design and bold colours.

PAD LONDON 2019
London, October 2019
The Willow Wall Light by Lara Bohinc and commissioned by Gallery FUMI gallery for a presentation at PAD London.
Branching out from the wall there are three pendulous florets, formed by elongated fingerlike brass rods, each elegantly illuminated by one long LED light nestling at the centre, reminiscent of the long neck of a flower’s style. The resulting piece is a sculptural play on nature, with a beautifully imposing presence that is both peaceful and captivating.
Material : Blackened brass
Dimensions: 490 width x 310 depth x 1150 mm height
The light is constructed entirely from brass at Bohinc’s workshop in Portugal. The brass is oxidized by hand to lend the feeling of timelessness, weight and ancient substance to its form.

LUNAR HOUSE
In September 2019, Bohinc Studio opened its doors to the Lunar House, a pop up showroom to mark the Moon landing’s 50th anniversary during this year’s London Design Festival. Space and planets continue to inspire the designs of Lara Bohinc, who presents aptly named new pieces such as the Jupiter vase and the Juno box at the Lunar House, alongside the freshly launched Planetaria collection and a selection from Lara’s collaboration with Kasthall.
With the Lunar House, Bohinc Studio presents its signature style in a full interior set up for the first time. The brand comes to life through Lara’s spatial treatment of a Victorian townhouse in the King’s Cross Design District. Curved undulated walls mix with period and futuristic aesthetics. The walls and floor are dark petrol blue, like the cosmos itself, and the objects and furniture dot the space like stars in the sky. The pieces in cream, tomato red, and sky blue colours, highlighted by brass frames, complement and contrast the dark space. ‘Colour has always been an important part of my design aesthetic, adds Lara Bohinc. I love to use it to highlight contrasts and create bold statements’.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF BAUHAUS
London, January 2019
The combination of pure yet intricate geometric forms is Lara Bohinc’s signature style and with these pieces also expresses the simplicity of Bauhaus design.
The chairs are pure and functional, stripped of all ornamentation, down to the elemental steel rods and cushions. The aim is clarity in form, but the pieces remain striking, dramatic and full of flair. The design incorporates straight lines, circles and squares, which unite to provide structural function to the seat.
The pieces are tailored to utilise modern industrial techniques, including laser cutting and welding.
“I continue to be influenced by pure geometry and the production led design of the Bauhaus”, says Lara Bohinc. “I work frequently with metal, exploring its versatility and sustainability - a reference to Marianne Brandt’s way of using the smallest numbers of materials to better celebrate their properties.”
